Opening Reception: The Extraordinary, Ordinary Nature of Interabled Love

August 1 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

cSPACE Marda Loop
Gallery Level 1
July 30th-August 24

Reception August 1st, 7pm-9pm in the Studio Theatre.

An art exhibit exploring romantic love and disability through paintings of everyday moments between the artist and her husband.

In her solo exhibit, Athena Cooper paints the interabled love story between herself and her able-bodied husband highlighting the everyday moments that make up their life together—from the mundane to the life-changing.

Born with the rare genetic disorder Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka “brittle bone disease”) and a wheelchair user since the age of six. Athena struggled with society’s ill-fitting narrative around disability that suggested finding a romantic partner would be an impossible task.

The reception will celebrate the culmination of two years of creative work. Light refreshments will be served along with live music provided by local cellist, Liam Epp.

The exhibit is made possible with the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts, Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary. It will be open to the public from July 30th to August 24th.
