Get to know an artist! Today’s spotlight is on Mackenzie Bedford (she/her).

Mackenzie is a visual storyteller who expresses herself through animation, illustration and murals. Mackenzie will be spending the next few weeks at cSPACE working on a projection mapping exploration. Sounds cool, right? What’s even cooler is that she will be using two powerful projectors to paint with light and animation on 3D objects. 

We asked Mackenzie a few questions to get to know her better. Here’s what she shared.

cSPACE: What’s your imaginary autobiography called? 

MB: “Look for the Pink Hair.” My hair colour often changes as a response to how I’m feeling about life, but pink is the most common. When I was in community management, you simply needed to look for the pink hair in the room to know who could take care of you.

cSPACE: What excites you about the Creative Incubator?

MB: It was a great opportunity to have the space and equipment I wouldn’t be able to access otherwise. I began learning animation to begin projection mapping 2 years ago, and it is time!

The support I’ve received already to get started has been amazing. I also have had the opportunity for musicians from the cohort to lend me their favourite tunes as a part of my project. I love music, so it’s exciting to have such diverse tracks.

It’s like being home – I used to work out of cSpace a lot when I lived in the neighborhood.

cSPACE: At cSPACE we live by the 4C’s: Creativity, Community, Collaboration, and Change. Which of these resonates the most with you right now?

MB: I’ve been actively trying to embody “collaboration” more these days. I’ve often worked alone, but a few opportunities to collaborate have shown me the value of being vulnerable with other people about your ideas. They get stronger, and often you realize them quicker!!

cSPACE: Where do you see yourself in five years?

MB: Enjoying my first international artist residency somewhere close to a beach.

cSPACE: That is a great plan, Mackenzie. We are looking forward to seeing what you hatch outside of the Incubator!
