The Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society, aka AWCS, was incorporated in 1981 as a non-profit organization and registered charity, and has been offering creative writing programs for all writers in the Calgary area with a mission is to enhance the creative writing experience through learning, community, and support.

The organization has many award-winning and published Canadian authors and continues to have new and emerging writers of all genres join their membership of over 350.

Together with AWCS’s creative writing classes and workshops, programs and events are designed to enhance the core offerings and bring writers and the community together.

Programs include Student readings, monthly Open Mics, an annual Writer in Residence program, and community events that bring prominent Canadian writers for special speaking presentations and workshops.

According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, Labour Day (the first Monday in September) has been a statutory holiday in Canada since 1894. It originated in the first workers’ rallies of the Victorian era and can be traced back to an 1872 printers’ strike in Toronto. Fighting for shortened work hours, on 25 March 1872, the printers went on strike.

On 15 April, a demonstration was held to show solidarity among the workers of Toronto. A parade of some 2,000 workers marched through the city, headed by marching bands. By the time the parade reached Queen`s Park, the sympathetic crowd had grown to 10,000.

For the strikers themselves, the short-term effects were very damaging. Many lost their jobs and were forced to leave Toronto. The long-term effects, however, were positive. After 1872, almost all union demands included the 9-hour day and the 54-hour week.

Throughout the 1880s, pressure built in Canada to declare a national labour holiday and on 23 July 1894, the government of Prime Minister John Thompson passed a law making Labour Day official.
