New cSPACE Illuminated Signage Shines a Light into the Community
July 13, 2023
On June 21st, we marked the summer solstice and celebrated the heritage, history, traditions, and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada on National Indigenous Peoples Day.
We chose this day to also formally share that our creative hub cSPACE King Edward will now be cSPACE Marda Loop – A place for Creative Boundary Crossings. This name change recognizes a shift from a building focus to acknowledging the geographical community cSPACE serves.
As part of this process work was initiated in 2021, we are also grateful to our collaboration with Indigenous leader, Dr. LeRoy Littlebear from Treaty 6, whose words are also engraved in our Poet’s Walk. Littlebear’s words of “A place for Creative Boundary Crossings” are intended to remind us that the reconciliation process will need to cross many divides and boundaries.
As he relayed at a lecture,
“If our contemporary world and governments adopted the mindset of artists, we will be able to come up with new creative solutions to age old problems such as inequality.”
Recognizing our commitment to stewarding a revitalized colonial school and the potential of creativity to be a force for positive change within our communities, remains a potential we are eager to explore.
We’re also pleased that cSPACE has installed two brand new illuminated signs above our entrances. The modern design amplifies the historic architectural features of this unique space while the extra illumination means that visitors are able to find us at any time of day.
Special thanks go to the Rozsa Foundation and an individual anonymous donation from Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster who made this project possible.
We are grateful for the community support for supporting cSPACE as a bright light and for all the positive feedback we’ve received so far!
