SUMMARY:The Extraordinary\, Ordinary Nature of Interabled Love
DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Level 1 \nIn her solo art exhibit\, Athena Cooper paints the interabled love story between herself and her able-bodied husband highlighting the everyday moments that make up their life together—from the mundane to the life-changing. \nBorn with the rare genetic disorder Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka “brittle bone disease”) and a wheelchair user since the age of six. Athena struggled with society’s ill-fitting narrative around disability that suggested finding a romantic partner would be an impossible task. Since meeting her husband ten years ago\, she has learned that a loving relationship that includes disability might look different from the outside\, but is remarkably and beautifully ordinary in all the ways that count. \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 1st\, 7-9pm. \nThe reception will celebrate the culmination of two years of creative work. Light refreshments will be served along with live music provided by local cellist\, Liam Epp. \nThe exhibit is made possible with the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts\, Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary.

\n \nUnlike documentaries that rely heavily on footage found on the news or social media\, both directors of If We Burn stood on the frontline of the 2019 Anti-ELAB movement and\, with their skilful cinematography\, captured shocking images of the movement\, leaving behind precious historical records. With their outstanding editing skills\, the film crystalised the blood and toil of those five months of a Hong Konger’s life and turned it into a 265-minute epic piece\, with never a dull moment. \n \nDirectors James LEONG and Lynn LEE have been long-time filming partners. They have visited protest scenes worldwide in the past ten years and produced one after another award-winning documentary. Their representative pieces include Wukan: The Village Committee\, awarded Best Feature at the Chinese Documentary Festival in 2015\, and Umbrella Diaries: The First Umbrella nominated for Best Feature Documentary at the Golden Horse Awards in 2018. \n \nIn 2020\, a work-in-progress If We Burn won the Next Award at the 12th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival and was selected in the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) under the “Ordinary Heroes: Made in Hong Kong” series. In 2023\, a worldwide premiere of the film’s full version was set at the IFFR and selected as the audience’s Top 10 favourite film. \n \n5年後的我們，未敢忘記。重臨抗爭現場，傾聽他和她當日做的每一個決定。 \nAfter 5 long years\, we still dare not forget about this all. And now\, let us revisit the protest scene and every decision we made during that time.

SUMMARY:Kathy Lewis: Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Kathy’s First Art Show \nFrom the moment she attended her first ‘plein air’ drawing class as a child\, Kathy Lewis has been a true artist at heart. Her artistic pursuits are as rich and varied as her life experiences\, with both often intertwined. Now in retirement\, Kathy would love to realize her longstanding dream of exhibiting her art in a gallery for her loved ones and the public to see. \nKathy has always been a dedicated student of her craft. She took an “Intro to Art” course while studying at University of Lethbridge. Then\, she enrolled in a weaving course at a small art school. She also has a certificate in Interior Design from Mount Royal College. In retirement\, she has attended painting classes at Kerby Centre\, Swinton Studios\, and a gallery class at The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. In 1972\, she was selected by a jury of local British Columbia artists to weave an abstract tapestry for the municipality of Vancouver. The project\, which took five months to complete\, was displayed in the lobby of Vancouver City Hall and later in the Planning Department Boardroom. She also showcased her work in the Western Arts and Crafts displays at the Calgary Stampede. \nKathy has been a resident of Chartwell Fountains of Mission since October 2023. Her walls are adorned with beautiful paintings\, and she is an active participant in resident activities. In addition to her artistic pursuits\, Kathy has supported various charities including Calgary Food Bank\, Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation\, and Calgary Homeless Foundation. Kathy’s wish to have a gallery exhibition for her art would fulfill a desire to impact people with her work\, including her friends\, family\, and fellow residents. \nThe Chartwell Foundation is pleased to arrange a gallery exhibition of Kathy’s work! Kathy’s art will be on display at cSPACE Marda Loop\, an acclaimed arts and culture hub in Calgary\, from June 10 to June 29\, with a private opening reception on June 26 where Kathy will celebrate with her loved ones.
