For a brief discussion of this challenge in context\, see The Money We Need by David Maggs. \nWe warmly invite arts organizations\, cultural institutions\, and creative enterprises to participate in an interactive and insightful three-hour workshop designed to demystify social finance. \nThis workshop represents a valuable opportunity to collectively envision how repayable finance can enhance your mission\, organizational stability\, and long-term impact. \nHosted by Michael Trent and David Maggs from the Metcalf Foundation\, this engaging session will: \n\nIntroduce the fundamental concepts of social finance\, showcasing how repayable\, low-interest loans\, supported by tailored assistance\, can transform organizational capacities and strengthen cultural impact.\nPresent inspiring examples from Canada and around the globe\, highlighting successful applications of social finance within the arts.\nFacilitate collaborative exploration of practical\, real-world use cases tailored specifically to arts organizations\, enabling participants to identify potential opportunities within their own contexts.\nFoster dialogue and shared learning\, helping us better understand and address the unique challenges and needs of cultural nonprofits.\n\nThe workshop is open to more than one person from your organization\, ideally senior staff and board volunteers. \nThe following day (June 6)\, Michael and David will make themselves available by appointment for one-on-one sessions to further explore your interest in this practice. \nWe look forward to your participation as we work towards a transformative and sustainable financial future for Canada’s arts community together.

This intro covers everything you need to know to get started.\n\n\nIntroduction to Wood Burning (Pyrography) for Beginners \nLearn something new and have fun during this hands-on workshop. This small class is perfect for those who are new to wood burning and want to explore the art of pyrography. This is also a good opportunity to try the Razer Tip Woodburning tool before you buy one. \nYou will learn step by step how to create a wood burned work of art. Little art experience is necessary just some time and patience. There is something very soothing and relaxing about burning patterns into wood. You will learn how to use the wood-burner safely. We will go over the difference between the wood burning tools that are available. You will learn how to transfer your drawing onto the wood\, which wood works best\, and how to add a bit of colour. \nWood is supplied and the tool that we use is the Razer Tip woodburning system. Feel free to bring your own reference material to trace or draw from or use templates provided. Some people freehand and just go for it and some people use reference material and trace their design. You can also do a bit of both:) Magically everyone does something totally different and unique to them! This class teaches you the foundational rules and language to begin creating your own custom patterns\, and the skills to adjust and fit patterns to fit you! \nThis course is five 3-hour sessions.
