I love climbing for its community\, its challenges\, and its ability to take me to some of the most beautiful places in the world. Growing up\, I focused mainly on competition climbing and sport climbing in the Bow Valley near Canmore\, Alberta. Since moving to Squamish\, British Columbia in 2013\, I have enjoyed the diversity and adventurous nature of trad and multi-pitch climbing. Developing a wide range of skills has allowed me to be involved in more adventurous climbing trips and even put up first ascents in remote areas of the world including Morocco and Greenland. Climbing is the gift that keeps on giving. \n  \nACCOMPLISHMENTS:\nSep 2013 | Blue Jeans\, Mt. Yamnuska (2nd ascent\, 5.13b multipitch)\nDec 2014 | Le Zahir\, Akchour Valley\, Morocco (First ascent\, 512b multipitch)\nJul 2015 | Adder Crack\, Squamish (5.13a trad)\nAug 2016 | Southwest Buttress of Hidden Tower\, Mythics Cirque\, Greenland (First ascent\, V 5.11)\nOct 2018 | Spirit of the West (5.14a sport) \nDec 2024 | Yamnuska: The Ragged Edge Film \n\n\n\nGET OUTSIDE ADVENTURES \nOur mission at Get Outside is to empower others to explore the outdoors\, challenge themselves\, learn new skills\, and have fun doing it. \nWe focus on getting women out exploring\, connecting\, and growing. The Get Outside experience doesn’t end with the adventure\, rather\, that’s where it begins. \nPortion of proceeds from every Vikki’s Vantage Point 4-pack sold will be donated to support programming at Get Outside. \nhttps://www.getoutsideadventures.ca/ \n\n\n\nMARIYA STOKES \nKnown for her quick wit and signature retro style\, Country Music Alberta’s (CMAB) two-time Horizon Female Artist of the Year (2019 & 2020)\, Calgary\, Alberta-based country artist Mariya Stokes\, has released five singles to date and is currently recording her debut\, full-length album with Juno Award-winning producers Spencer Cheyne and Justin Kudding\, which will release in late 2023. With Stokes’ previous releases reaching over 600\,000 streams across platforms\, her current single\, “Break My Heart\,” was nominated for “Horizon Single of the Year” at the 2021 CMAB Awards. \nPartnering with Travel Alberta and representing her home province on an international stage\, Stokes showcased at the United States Tour Operators Association’s annual conference in Austin\, TX in November 2023. In addition\, she was selected to perform at the 2022 Canadian Country Music Association’s (CCMA) Songwriter Showcase and has opened for artists including Ru-Paul’s Drag Race superstar Trixie Mattel\, Doc Walker\, and Jann Arden. Stokes also co-hosted the 2020 CMAB Award Show alongside CCMA Award Winner George Canyon. \nGiving back to the communities that raised her is important to Stokes: as an artist representative on the CCMA 2022 Host Committee\, Stokes co-chaired the Legacy and Community Engagement committee and was part of the team that planned\, executed\, and highlighted the CCMA’s and Calgary during Canadian Country Music Week. She was also a 2020 Artist in Residence at the Women’s Centre of Calgary. \nhttps://www.mariyastokes.com/ \n\n\n\nPink Boots Society \nMission: The Pink Boots Society was created to assist\, inspire and encourage women and/or non-binary individual fermented and alcoholic beverage industry professionals to advance their careers through education. \nWe are the movers and shakers in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry. We make fermented beverages with the highest possible quality. We are the women that own the companies\, package the product\, design the labels\, serve the drinks\, write about our industry – and just about everything in between. Most importantly\, we teach each other what we know through our own seminar programs\, and we help each other advance both front-of-the-house and back-of-the-house careers by raising money for educational scholarships. \nhttps://www.pinkbootssociety.org/

SUMMARY:Literature and Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The Calgary Institute for the Humanities presents the 6th Annual Naomi Lacey Memorial Lecture\nIn the century between 1750 and 1850\, the idea of freedom became a central concept for the ways in which European writers understood themselves and their literary works. Yet different writers had very different types of freedom in mind. While some focused on the freedom from patronage\, others talked about the freedom from the pressures of the literary market—and still others about the freedom from the rules governing individual genres\, or even a more abstract sense of freedom that readers could experience when reading literature. Drawing on texts by Rousseau\, Goethe\, Schiller\, and others\, this talk assesses how these various types of freedom coalesced into a concept of literature whose legacy is still felt today. \nMartin Wagner (Ph.D.\, Yale University\, 2014) is Professor of German at the University of Calgary. His research focuses on German literary and intellectual history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His latest book\, A Stage for Debate (University of Toronto Press\, 2023)\, assesses the contribution of the most important German-language stage of the nineteenth century\, Vienna’s Burgtheater\, to the social and political debates in Austria. He currently works on a SSHRC-funded project on the history of obedience in Germany.
