This engaging talk explores the rich history of rebus imagery—visual riddles that combine pictures and letters to convey layered meanings—and their evolution from 19th-century French ceramic traditions into contemporary artistic practice. \nFollowing the talk\, head down to the Alberta Craft Gallery on Level 2 for the artist reception\, where you can experience the exhibition firsthand and connect with the work in a welcoming\, social setting. \nRooted in a historical tradition popularized by makers such as the Faïencerie de Gien in France\, rebus plates once conveyed everything from moral lessons to political commentary. This contemporary exhibition revisits and reimagines that form\, offering fresh perspectives on the complexities of our current moment. \nFeaturing work by Montréal-born\, Calgary-based artist and Professor Emerita Mireille Perron—founder of the Laboratory of Feminist Pataphysics—this exhibition reflects a playful yet critical approach to art\, craft\, and social discourse. \nWe’re proud to host this free\, public event at cSPACE. DESCRIPTION:Leaving an Impression: Cyanotype Workshop with Mireille Perron\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nAlberta Craft Gallery – Level 2\nAugust 23\, 2025\n1:30 PM – 4:30 PM \nMake your own cyanotype print using an old photographic technique\, and learn how to use the local flora & fauna in your art! \nThis hands-on 2 1/2 hour workshop is an introduction to one of the first photographic processes ever developed. The cyanotype process\, also known as blueprint or sunprint utilizes photosensitive iron salts and continues to be relevant today to produce fine art prints. This process can be done with paper and fabric. This workshop will focus on cyanotype paper. You will design\, expose in the sun\, and develop in water your own cyanotypes. An UV lamp will be available if the sun is not showing up that day. \nThis is a contact printing method. Where the light reaches paper (or fabric)\, it turns blue. Where light is blocked\, it remains white\, or the colour of the paper. Participants are encouraged to bring objects/materials for their compositions. Select your objects thinking of the shadows they will leave. For example\, transparent reflective glass objects i.e. such as small drinking glasses with nice cut glass bottom\, and other random transparent objects. Her art work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Canada\, and more occasionally in Europe and the United States. She taught at the Alberta University of the Arts until 2018 when she received the title of Professor Emerita.
