SUMMARY:Patchwork Pronoun Earrings with artist Laura Olive
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Culture Days with the Alberta Craft Council and Laura Olive\nIn this workshop\, participants will learn the basics of hand sewing and embroidery by making mixed-media earrings made primarily of felt fabric. Providing an inclusive\, trans-friendly space to get creative\, chat\, and have fun! Participants will be given the freedom to experiment with the materials available to create a project they’re excited about. At the end\, they will leave with 1 pair of custom earrings that include their pronouns. \nThese free workshops are designed for ages 13 and up and will last up to 120 minutes. \nAbout the instructor: Laura Olive is an interdisciplinary emerging artist based in Calgary\, Alberta working on their final year at AUArts in the Media Arts Program. SUMMARY:Bright Nights Talk with Carissa Baktay
DESCRIPTION:Carissa Baktay will speak about her exhibition Form(ed) and the body of work she is making with glass\, horse hair and textile.\n\n\nAlberta Craft Council’s presents Bright Nights with Carissa Baktay \nIn conjunction with her exhibition Form(ed) at the Alberta Craft Gallery – Calgary from May 6 – June 24\, 2023.  Carissa Baktay will speak about her recent body of sculptural work. Combining found objects with glass\, hair and textile\, the artist will elaborate on her use of symbol\, language and gendered body in her performative artifacts and installations.  \nThis exhibition was generously funded through The Alberta Foundation for the Arts \n \nThursday\, May 11\, 4th Floor Treehouse\, cSPACE – Marda Loop\, 1721 – 29 Avenue SW Calgary \nCash Bar Opens:  6:30 pm \nPresentation: 7:00 – 8:30 pm \nExhibition Tour of Form(ed) with Carissa at Alberta Craft Gallery:  8:30 – 9:00 pm \n \nAbout the Artist: \nCarissa Baktay is a multi-media sculptor\, currently exploring glass\, hair\, textile and found materials. As an experienced glass maker she has earned degrees from Alberta University of the Arts\, attended the Rhode Island School of Design with scholarship\, and received her Masters’ from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Using experimental technologies and mediums combined with time honoured glass making methods\, she has been invited to work in studios in Bulgaria\, Norway\, Finland and Portugal. Recently her work has been recognized with multiple grants from The Alberta Foundation for the Arts\, The Canada Council for the Arts\, SÍM\, KÍM\, and the Icelandic Design Fund.  \nCarissa Baktays’ process based practice is deeply connected to material and memory and by collecting and reimagining materials\, she transforms their presence in space and presents a new poetic material understanding that shares the borders between art\, craft and design. Ironic and playful\, these mixed material sculptures come to life through intuitive process and intimate performative acts.
