SUMMARY:Gallery Reception: Rebus Plates for our Times/Assiettes Rebus pour temps qui Courent
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Reception: Rebus Plates for our Times/Assiettes Rebus pour temps qui Courent\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nAlberta Craft Gallery – Level 2\nApril 11\, 2026\n1:00 PM – 4:00 PM\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Alberta Craft Council and Alliance Française at cSPACE for an afternoon of art\, ideas\, and community with Rebus Plates for Our Times / Assiettes Rébus pour Les Temps Qui Courent. \nBegin your visit on Level 4 in the RGO Treehouse with a thought-provoking craft talk\, Pictorial Puns: Rebus Plates for Our Times\, presented by craft historian Dr. Jennifer Salahub. This engaging talk explores the rich history of rebus imagery—visual riddles that combine pictures and letters to convey layered meanings—and their evolution from 19th-century French ceramic traditions into contemporary artistic practice. \nFollowing the talk\, head down to the Alberta Craft Gallery on Level 2 for the artist reception\, where you can experience the exhibition firsthand and connect with the work in a welcoming\, social setting. \nRooted in a historical tradition popularized by makers such as the Faïencerie de Gien in France\, rebus plates once conveyed everything from moral lessons to political commentary. This contemporary exhibition revisits and reimagines that form\, offering fresh perspectives on the complexities of our current moment. \nFeaturing work by Montréal-born\, Calgary-based artist and Professor Emerita Mireille Perron—founder of the Laboratory of Feminist Pataphysics—this exhibition reflects a playful yet critical approach to art\, craft\, and social discourse. \nWe’re proud to host this free\, public event at cSPACE. Everyone is welcome to attend and experience the creativity and conversation unfolding within our community. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by Alliance Française. \n\nRSVP Online \n\nSCHEDULE: \n\n\n Craft Talk – 1:00 PM- 2:00 PM: Pictorial Puns: Rebus Plates for Our Times Talk with Dr. Jennifer Salahub\, Craft Historian\, RGO Treehouse 4th floor\, cSPACE\nArtist Reception – 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Alberta Craft Calgary\, 2nd floor\, cSPACE\n\nFree | Everyone Welcome

SUMMARY:Wood Reimagined: John Groen Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Wood Reimagined: John Groen Artist Reception\nHosted by Alberta Craft Council\n______ \nEveryone is invited to meet the artist at this free SPOTLIGHT Reception for Wood Reimagined – John Groen\n\n\nWe are please to host a public reception with the artist in attendance on September 20 from 2-4 pm. \nAbout the artist John Groen \nArtist Statement: I have always been passionate about designing and creating unique items from wood. My father’s creativity and resourcefulness inspired me as I watched him transform what others considered unusable wood into functional and beautiful furniture. I strive to blend traditional craftsmanship with playful innovation. \nMy signature material is dyed maple veneer\, often used in skateboards. Through experimental bending\, layering\, and lamination\, I combine these colourful sections with various other wood species to create bowls\, charcuterie boards\, tables\, and wall art. Sustainability is at the core of my work. Each piece is intentionally crafted from repurposed or leftover wood\, adding history and character to every creation. My craft is about giving old wood new stories—stories that you can eat from\, set items on\, or proudly display on your walls. \nArtist Bio: John is a lifelong learner and community-oriented maker who has honed his craft through practical work experience. He is a former woodworking teacher and holds a cabinet-making certification from SAIT. His skills have been enriched by collaborating with fellow members at his local makerspace\, as well as through personal exploration and experimentation. Operating under the name Mient Woodworking\, John has been a member of the Alberta Craft Council since 2022. He has also been a part of Fuse33 Makerspace since 2018 and is a member of Hand Made Here YYC\, a collective of local artisans in Calgary. \nReception: Saturday\, September 20\, 2025 | 2 – 4 pm \nAlberta Craft SPOTLIGHT – cSPACE – Marda Loop\, 2nd floor\, 1729 – 29 Avenue SW\, Calgary \nThe parking lot and accessible entrance are off 29 Avenue. Street parking is available free of charge around the building. \nThis SPOTLIGHT exhibition runs through September 13 – November 1\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Leaving an Impression: Cyanotype Workshop with Mireille Perron
DESCRIPTION:Leaving an Impression: Cyanotype Workshop with Mireille Perron\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nAlberta Craft Gallery – Level 2\nAugust 23\, 2025\n1:30 PM – 4:30 PM \nMake your own cyanotype print using an old photographic technique\, and learn how to use the local flora & fauna in your art! \nThis hands-on 2 1/2 hour workshop is an introduction to one of the first photographic processes ever developed. The cyanotype process\, also known as blueprint or sunprint utilizes photosensitive iron salts and continues to be relevant today to produce fine art prints. This process can be done with paper and fabric. This workshop will focus on cyanotype paper. You will design\, expose in the sun\, and develop in water your own cyanotypes. An UV lamp will be available if the sun is not showing up that day. \nThis is a contact printing method. Where the light reaches paper (or fabric)\, it turns blue. Where light is blocked\, it remains white\, or the colour of the paper. Participants are encouraged to bring objects/materials for their compositions. Select your objects thinking of the shadows they will leave. For example\, transparent reflective glass objects i.e. such as small drinking glasses with nice cut glass bottom\, and other random transparent objects. Intricate flowers and leaves like any small objects with an intricate contour such as lace\, strings\, gears\, buttons etc. Experimentation can produce some really interesting results. \nAll materials provided. \nBe ready to go outside in the sun (hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen…) \nPurchase Tickets: www.eventbrite.ca/e/leaving-an-impression-cyanotype-workshop-with-mireille-perron-tickets-1466835798359?aff=ebdssbdestsearch \nAbout the Artist: Mireille Perron was born in 1957 in Montréal\, Québec.
