DESCRIPTION:Where the Land Cradles Me by Carrie Schurig \ncSPACE Marda Loop\nCubby Gallery Level 2 \nSeptember 27 – December 1\, 2025 – HELD OVER UNTIL DECEMBER 1\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \nWhere the Land Cradles Me is a series of mixed-media paintings\, with each work carrying more than a single story; many stories\, many voices\, many landscapes\, many truths interwoven. \nThe surfaces hold tension and harmony\, permanence beside change\, silence beside song\, and memory beside dream. Yet these contrasts remind us of what is at stake. The land that cradles us is under threat\, and climate justice is not optional; it is essential. \nThis series asks viewers to consider how place is never one story but a gathering of countless narratives\, layered across time\, culture\, and imagination. It calls on viewers to recognize our shared responsibilities to protect the places that shape us. The land is more than a backdrop; it is a lifeline. It is about how the land cradles us all\, differently and together\, shaping the stories we live and pass on. To honour it means to act\, to defend its stories\, its balance and its future. \nAbout the Artist: \nCarrie Schurig is a Calgary-based artist whose work spans pencil drawing\, mixed media\, and painted resin\, Conceptual and representational\, her pieces explore memory\, emotion\, and the layered connections between people and place. Her current series is deeply rooted in her relationship with the land\, reflecting on how it shapes identity\, belonging\, and our sense of time. \nIn addition to her studio practice\, Carrie is a Visual Arts Specialist and Fine Arts Learning Leader with the Calgary Board of Education\, guiding students and communities to engage meaningfully with the arts. She is also embarking on a Master of Education for Change\, exploring how education can drive social and environmental transformation. \nThrough her art and teaching\, Carrie offers a distinct\, thoughtful\, and imaginative perspective on the world\, one that invites reflection\, curiosity\, and connection.

His parents were artistic and his mother was a professional dress designer. His father focused on silver smithing\, ceramics and sculpting and his maternal grandmother was a landscape artist. \nJan immigrated to Canada in the late 60’s and for more than 35 years worked as a printer at the Calgary Herald newspaper. He has had a passion for art most of his life which influenced his children to take art degrees. \nJan pays attention to detail which is evident in his art. His drawings have intricate detail with repetitive patterns. His subject matter is surreal and imaginative. Jan is passionate about art and has devoted his entire life to creating his one of a kind masterpieces. \n

You will be printing your own beautiful linen holiday stocking. \nAbout the artist: Natalie Gerber began her studies in 1995 at The Natal Technikon\, in the Fashion Design program\, Durban (South Africa). After immigrating to Canada her interests in textiles and design developed while studying at The Alberta University of the Arts\, formerly known as Alberta College of Art + Design. Natalie earned a BFA Degree (with Distinction) in Fibre/Textiles in 2003\, and later in 2007\, a post-graduate Certificate in Creative Pattern Cutting for the Fashion Industry\, from the London College of Fashion in London (England). \nHaving recently completed a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Craft from the Alberta University of the Arts\, Natalie is currently engaged in a comprehensive exploration of the boundaries and potentialities of textile forms. With a performance that is as beautiful to see as it is to hear\, the ERB strives to bring their concert alive to the senses of the audience. \nAlso included in this year’s concert is the GUITAR ORCHESTRA\, from the CLASSICAL GUITAR SOCIETY OF CALGARY (CGSC)\, conducted by MANDY LOBAN-JORDAN. DESCRIPTION:Make a collection of wood burned ornaments to celebrate the things you love. Make them for yourself or as a unique gift. Materials included!\n\n\nMake your own set of beautiful wooden ornaments! \nLearn something new and have fun during this hands on workshop. This small class is perfect for those who are new to wood burning and want to explore the art of pyrography. This is also a good opportunity to try the Razer Tip Woodburning tool before you buy one. You will learn step by step how to create a wood burned work of art. Little art experience is necessary just some time and patience. There is something very soothing and relaxing about burning patterns into wood. You will learn how to use the wood-burner safely. We will go over the difference between the wood burning tools that are available. You will learn how to transfer your drawing onto the wood slices. You will create a set of five pine slice ornaments. Wood is supplied and the tool that we use is the Razer Tip woodburning system. Feel free to bring your own reference material to trace or draw from or use many templates provided. Some people freehand and just go for it and some people use reference material and trace their design. You can also do a bit of both:) Magically everyone does something totally different and unique to them! It’s a fun thing to do for a date night or a new activity with friends or family. There are only 5 people maximum in a class\, ages 12 and up.
