SUMMARY:Riku Laakkonen:"Evolution from a Diaper to Puppet" (In person or Online)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interesting talk with Riku Laakkonen\, a pioneer in the development of communal methods of puppet and object theatre.\n\n\nRiku Laakkonen: “Evolution from a Diaper to Puppet” \nZooming in from Finland\, Riku shares his work with the elderly in his talk “Evolution from a Diaper to Puppet”\, work that aims to de-stigmatize this object of care. This is a clear example of the power of Applied Puppetry*. \nFollowing the talk will be a Q&A. \nRiku writes: “In my research I explore collaboration with material objects and elderly people who have memory disorders. In different artistic experiments I asked “what object is used daily by all those who live and work in nursing home? I determined it was the adult brief or diaper. Material objects are an essential part of interaction between humans and their environment. We employ objects in different contexts and use them all the time. When the adult brief\, the object of care\, was relocated into an artistic context it became a protagonist. Nurses and elderly persons were invited to see not just a disposable object\, but a puppet\, a voice and a conduit for expression.” \nRiku Laakkonen is a puppeteer\, director\, actor\, and teacher. After studying at DAMU (Theatre Academy of Music and Art) in Prague\, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences\, and Turku University of Applied Sciences he has been working with both professionals and amateurs. He is one of the founding members of the Centre of Stage Animation Research (founded 2007). He started his artistic doctoral studies at the Tampere University’s Center for Research Theatre Work in August 2020. His thesis “Object expression and social death: Animation with Kanssa building the weak agency of the elderly” is part of the wider Kone foundation-financed Social Death at the Threshold research project. \nThis session will be of particular interest to social workers and therapists\, working with the elderly. However\, the information will be transferable to many settings and concerns. For ages 18+ \nDate: Saturday\, November 25 2023 \nTime: 11:00 HRS MST \nLocation: cSPACE (1721 29 Avenue Southwest\, Calgary\, AB T2T 6T7) or online Zoom link. cSPACE offers free parking\, cycling racks\, convenient access to public transit\, and is located along bus routes 6\, 7\, 107\, 13. The theatre is an accessible space\, enter from parking lot on the north side of the building. \nAccessibility: We are committed to the purposeful inclusion of all people. We strive to reduce barriers and we value everyone’s participation in our programs. If you identify a challenge to you\, or others attending\, please contact us – we recognize our limitations as a small organization. \nIf\, for any reason\, the Zoom meeting link provided to you experiences technical issues\, we will immediately send you an alternative link via email (or Eventbrite). This link will connect you to the event hosted on Google Meet\, another reliable and user-friendly video conferencing platform. \nThis event is part of the 2023 Festival of Ideas – an annual conference\, produced by W.P. Puppet Theatre Society. It explores the theory and practice of how puppet power promotes and impacts positive social change. In 2023 we ask\, how can puppets\, ‘metaphors of matter’\, help us address our material world? \n*Applied Puppetry\, a term coined by Matt Smith FHEA\, University of Portsmouth\, is the field of ‘puppetry beyond performance’. Puppetry that is used as a communication and expressive tool in settings such as education\, therapeutic interventions\, social action\, institutions and other social settings.

SUMMARY:We Are The Shakespeares Of Our Own Lives (In person or Online)
DESCRIPTION:Join Tea as she discusses the stories hidden within objects.\n\n\nImagine a day in your life when you need to suddenly leave your home forever and you can only pack one suitcase. What will you take? Lots of objects have a practical value\, but some of them carry stories about precious moments of our past. With these objects we can recreate the feeling of home wherever we go. \nZooming in from Slovania\, Tea Kovše will share her research of personal objects in an eldery home\, because the elderly have very strong experiences of losing and recreating their home. She also works with young people\, as we all carry precious moments inside us and these are locked in particular objects. \nIn individual meetings and workshops she works with a variety of people to find the way of telling these stories through story telling\, music and puppetry. \nJoin her research method and share her vision to create puppetry by any means and remember to bring your precious object! \nDate: Saturday\, November 25th \nTime: 13:00 HRS (MST) \nWe are using a 24 hour clock. SUMMARY:Unveiling Post-Consumer Paper's Potential with Puppets (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop for Reggio-inspired educators\, participants will discover the storytelling potential of post-consumer papers.\n\n\nGuided by artist and educator Jennifer Stables\, participants will delve into the art of crafting handheld mask puppets and exploring their use in the classroom. Participants will be invited to engage with a variety of post-consumer papers (magazines\, newspapers\, tissue paper\, gift wrap\, office paper\, old books\, paper bags\, etc.) by folding\, bending\, cutting\, and crumpling them. They will be encouraged to play and explore using their sense of sight\, sound\, smell\, and touch. They will be asked to reflect on the story of the paper. Where did it come from? Who has it been? This exploration will allow educators to gain a deeper understanding of the materials and explore their potential for creative expression. \nFollowing this exploration\, participants will have the opportunity to share their findings and insights with one another. This conversation will hopefully foster a sense of community and inspire new ideas and approaches to working with papers. \nBuilding upon their discoveries\, participants will then be guided to create their own handheld mask puppets. Rather than following a step-by-step process\, participants will be encouraged to apply their discoveries and insights to their own unique creations. They will be invited to use techniques such as layering\, crumpling\, and folding the paper to create different forms. \nTo finish the mask puppet\, a wooden dowel will be attached to the back to create a handle. Participants will be encouraged to explore moving and performing their mask puppets. There will be time for presentation\, sharing\, and reflection at the end of the class. \nJoin Jennifer on Saturday\, November 25th\, from 13:00 – 15:30 HRS (MST) for this engaging workshop. \nBio: Jennifer Stables is an experienced Artist and Art Educator with a background in Reggio-Inspired teaching and learning. Her whimsical artwork includes puppets\, paintings\, sculptures\, and illustrations. She has created community art programs\, worked as an art educator and classroom teacher\, and currently works as an Artist in Residence for schools in Calgary and surrounding areas.

SUMMARY:I See You
DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nLevel 2 Gallery \nSolo show of portraits by Lenore Gish. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI SEE YOU is a tribute to the women in my life.. This collection of work delves into the complex\, diverse and intriguing community of women who have become part of my world. These ladies are a cumulation of family\, friends\, and strangers who have wandered through my studio. \nA number of my works in I SEE YOU are watercolour on paper. I’ve surrounded them with multiple layers of acrylic paint\, paper\, fabric\, inks\, pencil and sewing machine stitches. Using mixed media enabled me to create visual interest and tension on the surface\, emphasizing the beauty and wisdom of my subject. The layering process represents my long history with quilt making\, especially my delight at creating details that can only be appreciated close up. Lastly the stitching is an integral part of my work. Not only is the stitching a part of my history\, it is the common thread between us all. \nIt is my hope that viewers will connect with the narratives woven within each piece. From strength to vulnerability\, resilience to introspection\, “I SEE YOU” is especially sensitive to how woman have struggled to feel ”seen” in history. It is an exploration of identity\, empowerment\, and the universal threads that bind us all. Step into my world where through the language of art\, the female narrative takes center stage.
