SUMMARY:Hippocrates - Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Alberta election is imminent. Find out why the privatization of our healthcare system is a huge problem.\n\n\nHealthcare Documentary Screening – Calgary \nJoin us for an in-person screening of an eye-opening documentary that sheds light on the privatization of Alberta’s healthcare system. This event will take place on Thu May 18 2023. Doors will open at 6:00 PM in the cSPACE studio theatre. \nIn a showdown between unions and free-market capitalism\, a college-aged protagonist\, challenges a powerful conservative Health Minister whose controversial decisions have led to an exodus of doctors and nurses leaving Alberta. Health Law professors\, politicians\, healthcare workers\, and union leaders will be interviewed to find out who wins and who loses under a two-tiered healthcare system. More broadly\, the film will explore if Canadian universal healthcare is being threatened. \nThe documentary explores the challenges faced by patients and healthcare professionals alike and offers a unique perspective on the state of healthcare in Canada. After the screening\, we will have a Q&A session with U of C Health Law professor Lorian Hardcastle and filmmaker Kieran Fong. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn more about healthcare in Canada and connect with others who are passionate about improving the system. Don’t miss out! \n\n\n\nAbout the filmmakers: \nKIERAN FONG is an Edmontonian documentary filmmaker whose films focus on poignant social issues. SUMMARY:Allergic to Water
DESCRIPTION:Allergic to Water\nA dark comedy about the world’s most famous mermaid \n A special presentation by \nInside Out Theatre & Wee Witches \n JUNE 8th & 9th @ 7:30 pm\, JUNE 10th @ 2:00 pm\n@ cSPACE Marda Loop (1721 29th St SW) \nDiscussion Panel June 10th after 2pm Show. The post-show discussion panel aims to offer an opportunity for our audience to engage in a conversation that extends beyond the show. It will offer a space to foster both an artistic conversation and a social conversation about the realities of chronic illness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllergic to Water\, created by Jacqueline Russell and performed in collaboration with musician Jeremy Gignoux\, tells the story of Melusina\, a mermaid trapped in a human body. Melusina develops a mysterious chronic illness that leaves her unable to work or function. As she attempts to navigate the medical system to find answers\, her attempts to be a credible witness for her body are dismissed\, ignored and pathologized. The show explores the gendered implications of chronic illness\, and the ways in which women struggle to be heard and believed by the medical system.  Allergic to Water explores how humour\, parody\, and ridiculousness can deconstruct expectations about the often-unwitnessed experience of chronic pain and tell a different story. \nMature Content Warnings: Top half nudity with “pasties”\, foul language\nTrigger Warnings: Discussion of chronic illness and medical trauma

The people of Hong Kong marched — 1 million strong\, then 2 million — to save what they saw as the city’s eroding freedoms and rule of law. When their demands went unheeded\, the protests intensified\, and the streets of Hong Kong became soaked in tear gas and blood as valiant frontline protesters clashed with riot police. Behind the frontliners stood a peaceful silent majority\, committed to a hard-won solidarity as they attempt to save the city that they love. \n“Love in the Time of Revolution” takes viewers onto the streets of Hong Kong\, to the very front lines of the protests\, and follows the stories of just some of the protesters and their fellow Hong Kong citizens. It tells their extraordinary stories: the stories of ordinary people at a pivotal moment in their city’s history\, as they experience hope and desperation\, love and heartbreak\, fighting for their home. \n*設映後坐談，可與導演於線上對談 \n*There will be a hybird post-screening discussion session with the director.

SUMMARY:Between Two Worlds: An Evening of Mediumship with Andy Byng
DESCRIPTION:Andy will be delivering messages of love and encouragement from your friends and loved ones in the Spirit World\n\nWorld renowned medium Andy Byng\, who was also featured on Netflix’s Surviving Death\, will be touring Canada during 2023 and 2024. Known for his level of detail and accuracy\, Andy will be delivering messages of love and encouragement from your loved ones in the Spirit World.\n\n\nA B O U T  A N D Y \nAndy’s greatest passion has always been to publicly demonstrate his mediumship\, and to teach others how to develop their own gifts. \nAlthough Andy had been aware of the spirit world from a young age\, he did not begin to develop his mediumship until he was eighteen-years-old. Andy completed most of his mediumistic development at the world-renowned Arthur Findlay College\, where he is now a tutor and course organiser. \nAlthough Andy originally hails from Birmingham (UK)\, his work as a Evidential Medium takes him across the world\, and he currently resides in Toronto\, Canada. Andy’s passion and dedication to the spirit world is clear: He works tirelessly to reunite people with their loved ones\, and to teach others how to develop their own mediumship. \nAndy is now embarking on a tour of Canada to take his renowned mediumship across the country\, reuniting people with the loved ones through his accurate and heartfelt mediumship. \nT H E  E V E N T \nDuring the evening\, Andy will become aware of your loved ones in the Spirit World\, and through the use of factual pieces of information\, it is his job to tell the story of how your loved ones lived and expressed themselves during their physical lives. \nAt its best\, mediumship has the potential to change lives\, by opening our minds to the reality that when the physical bodily experiences the process we called death\, the mind – or soul – which constitutes our personality\, self-consciousness\, intelligence and reason\, survive. Mediumship demonstrates to us that although not physically present in our lives anymore\, our friends and loved ones who have passed away are still with us\, and continue to have a loving and encouraging presence within our lives. \nIf you have never been to an Evening of Mediumship before\, there is nothing untoward or mysterious that will happen. To get an idea of what the evening will be like\, please check out the video above of Andy demonstrating his mediumship.

SUMMARY:Art - an Exhibition by Suzanne Farman
DESCRIPTION:Level 4 Gallery\nJune 26 – July 22 \nReception July 22nd \n5pm-8pm \nArtist Statement\nNew Beginnings\, an exhibition of original abstract paintings by Calgary based artist Suzanne Farman in her cSPACE debut. For this series\, Farman was particularly influenced by bringing different views of visual objects or figures together resulting in a painting that appeared abstracted on the canvas surface.Themes of new beginnings are inspired by emotional experience. Images of distorted reality are used to make them expressive of Farman’s inner feelings and ideas. Farman uses intense colours along with highly textured\, generous paint application. Farman hopes to evoke powerful emotions by creating harmony where colour has a life of its own: not everyone reacts the same way to the same colour.
