I received my first artistic award at age nine and I advocate for mental health through my art. In 2015\, I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Fine Arts\, and immediately afterwards\, I founded LOUD (Let Optimism Unleash Dreams) Art Society\, a non-profit organization that supports the cultivation of positive mental health and well-being through creative practices. \nMuch of my artistic practice is informed by community connection through public art projects\, murals\, and workshops that key into art-making and mental health. Bright colours\, pattern-making\, found objects\, and newspaper are elements that I return to throughout my practice and are informed by my research on the metaphysical and its ties to humanity\, empathy\, and joy. \nAt the heart of my practice is a deep appreciation of the power of the arts to change lives for the better. My ongoing series of woven newspaper sculptures\, for example\, reframe materials that exacerbate mental health issues for many\, to speak to humanity’s ability to take uncertainty and pain and transform it slowly and intentionally into something beautiful and unexpected. \nDuring the 2023 Celebration for the Arts hosted by Mayor Gondek and Calgary Arts Development\, I was honoured to receive the Mamdani Arts Leadership Award. I was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medal for 2023\, which recognizes exceptional contributions to Alberta’s communities. I have been awarded grant funding by Calgary Arts Development and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. As well as running LOUD Art Society\, working with CARFAC Alberta\, and teaching at the University of Calgary\, I recently completed an extended artist-in-residence program with the Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre. \nwww.taravahab.com \n_____________ \nAbout Sepidar: \nI have been creating art for as long as I can remember and I am working as a professional performance artist . I write my own play\, creat music\, and love singing. Currently I am completing my master’s in Counselling Psychology at the University of Calgary. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Artistry of Robert Greenwood\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nStudio Theatre + Level 2 Gallery\n5-7pm Gallery viewing\n7pm Screening \nSun.Ergos presents a screening of Robert Greenwood’s last performance of Shakespeare: 21 Characters from 15 Plays. \nFrom Showpass: \nCome and experience a roller coaster of emotions as Bob transforms before your eyes into 21 of the bard’s characters. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: The Extraordinary\, Ordinary Nature of Interabled Love
DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Level 1\n July 30th-August 24 \nReception August 1st\, 7pm-9pm in the Studio Theatre. \nAn art exhibit exploring romantic love and disability through paintings of everyday moments between the artist and her husband.\nIn her solo exhibit\, Athena Cooper paints the interabled love story between herself and her able-bodied husband highlighting the everyday moments that make up their life together—from the mundane to the life-changing. \nBorn with the rare genetic disorder Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka “brittle bone disease”) and a wheelchair user since the age of six. Athena struggled with society’s ill-fitting narrative around disability that suggested finding a romantic partner would be an impossible task. \nThe reception will celebrate the culmination of two years of creative work. Light refreshments will be served along with live music provided by local cellist\, Liam Epp. \nThe exhibit is made possible with the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts\, Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary. It will be open to the public from July 30th to August 24th.
