SUMMARY:Exhibition: Cabinet of Curiosities

She is currently working at the Alberta Craft Council as a gallery assistant\, and this is her first time showing her work in a public space. \nHer paintings are inspired by Victorian field guides\, and she focuses on mixing images of real-life specimens with her own tantasy creations inspired by playing Dungeons & Dragons with her friends. Many of the pieces in this show are of real creatures\, but some\, even within series\, are entirely fictional. \nLearn More at: www.clevercorvid.ca

SUMMARY:Sonoma Art Studio exhibition: Indépendants
DESCRIPTION:Sonoma Art Studio 2025 Student Exhibition: Indépendants\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Levels 1 and 2\nJuly 8 – 19\, 2025\n9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed on Sunday) \n“Indépendant”\, meaning “independent” in French\, traces its roots back to the Salon des Indépendants\, which began in Paris in 1884. Upholding the motto “Sans jury ni récompense” (“No jury\, no awards”)\, the original exhibition was a bold statement against institutionalized art and authoritative selection processes. It sought to create an open platform where all artists could present their work without restriction. In the same spirit\, our Indépendants exhibition today embraces that tradition. Regardless of genre\, style\, or level of experience\, this space has been curated to allow artists to express their voices freely. The works from Sonoma Art Studio reflect the power of unbounded expression and the authenticity of independent creation. \nWe invite you to experience this celebration of sincerity and artistic freedom— not through the lens of judgement\, but through the discovery of new perspectives and emotional resonance. \nLearn More at: www.artstudiosonoma.com

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Linnea Martina Hannigan – Shifting Pigments | Reframing Watercolour
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Linnea Martina Hannigan – Shifting Pigments | Reframing Watercolour\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Level 2\nJuly 21- Aug 4\, 2025\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \nReframe watercolour within the context of contemporary art\, challenging preconceived notions of what this medium can achieve. I don’t chase the perfect mark. Instead\, I let the painting breathe\, revealing its own history through translucent layers….. I like to refer to artwork painted in contemporary Watercolour and Inks as “living works of art.” Translating places into pigments\, into works of art that hold a place within them a connection that resonates with the viewer! Controlled pigments only to a glimpse of premeditation\, ending in energy transformation! To achieve this\, my work is about the movement\, manipulation and responding to colour transformations and the pigment itself. “Watercolour isn’t just a medium—it’s alive. The pigments shift\, transform\, and respond\, shaping themselves into something unexpected. Noting that my works are painted on raw canvas and birch panels make you ponder if these are in fact Watercolours themselves! \nUltimately\, my work seeks to reframe watercolour\, challenging preconceived notions of what this medium can achieve.” Rediscover watercolour\, see all that this wonderful medium can be transformed into! \nLearn More: www.riverviewartists.com

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Art in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Art in the Park\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Level 1\nJuly 23 – August 9\n8:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Closed on Sundays) \n\n\n\nSee Canada’s wild beauty through the eyes of the twelve talented artists. Artists spent several days and nights exploring the lakes\, trails\, wildlife and spectacular views in Glacier National Park as part of the Art in the Park residency. \nPresented in partnership with Parks Canada and the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre\, this unique artist residency program has brought creators into Glacier National Park’s breathtaking Rogers Pass since 2008. The result is a powerful collection of work that captures the majesty\, solitude\, and spirit of the Selkirk Mountains. \nThese artists were granted rare access to explore the park’s lakes\, trails\, and wildlife—living\, hiking\, and creating in one of Canada’s most rugged and spectacular environments. The pieces they produced span a wide range of styles and mediums\, from oils and infrared photography to ceramics and installation\, all rooted in firsthand encounters with the land. \nThis touring exhibition is a celebration of both artistic exploration and environmental connection—an invitation to experience the park through the eyes of those who walked its paths and translated its grandeur into deeply personal and evocative works of art. \nParticipating Artists: \n\nAbby Wilson | Nelson\nAmanda Reber | Calgary\nDaniel Stewart | Revelstoke\nKimberley McNeil | Calgary\nLisa Figueroa | Sicamous\nMarie Moose | Revelstoke\nMichelle Austen | Calgary\nOrion Alexis | Burnaby\nPaulo Majano | Surrey\nSab Curtis | New Denver\nShirley Liu | Golden\nSusie Kathol | Revelstoke\n\n  \n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Into the Void and Out of the Void
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Into the Void and Out of the Void | Carmine Aspen\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nCupola Gallery Level 4\nJuly 29- Aug 25\, 2025\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \nOpening Reception: August 1\, 2025\, 6-8pm \nRSVP for Free: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/into-the-void-and-out-of-the-void-opening-reception-tickets-1533524806979 \nInto the Void and Out of the Void is the first solo exhibition of work by Carmine Aspen as a mixed-media artist. This exhibition is designed to be a journey into the many forms joy takes though an artist’s creations. Most of Carmine’s work is informed by their journey navigating a very chaotic and melancholic mind: bright and hopeful but equally existential and depressive. This collection highlights that dichotomy by bringing together works that were created with a desire to discover what things bring joy regardless of their state of mind. \nPaint flowing in whatever way made sense and made the canvas more inviting; the flow of ink as an understanding of its nature grew; the soothing rhythm of bringing needle to fabric in a orderly way; favorite bits and pieces of paper coming together to create new things; the smooth glide of mud under a spatula; or bringing to light places that would better suit being in a story. \nCome enjoy this diverse collection of eclectic palettes and surreal expressions that lean into the fantastical & abstract\, created in a wide range of mediums: collage\, paint\, embroidery\, and more. \nAbout the Artist \nCarmine Aspen is a Calgary born mixed-media artist. They specialize in finding new and fun ways to mix up all kinds of mediums together to create colourful\, surreal\, and abstract pieces. If they can use their hands to make something pretty and chaotic\, they’re in. They’ve been creating since they were a child as a way to keep their active ADHD brain happy and as a much-needed source of relief from an ongoing series of mental health issues. They choose to see art in everything and truly believe anything can be used for art. When they’re not creating physical art\, you can find them immersed in Calgary’s vibrant writing and live performance scenes. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fabulous Over 40 by Laurie MacBrown Photography
DESCRIPTION:Fabulous Over 40 by Laurie MacBrown Photography\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Level 1\nSeptember 8 – 20\, 2025\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \n\n\n\nThis isn’t just pretty pictures. It’s a celebration of women who are part of a growing movement to challenge the false narrative that beauty fades with age. \nThe Fabulous Over 40 Art Exhibit shines a spotlight on the portraits and stories of women aged 40 and up. \nInstead of being shamed into the shadows\, each of these women chose to step into the light. \nThey said yes to a transformative boudoir portrait experience. They said yes to being seen. Boldly\, vulnerably\, and without apology. \nThe goal? To rewrite the story: Women over 40 are beautiful. The ticking clock is a myth. And the years ahead are something to look forward to. \nAs an artist and photographer\, my mission is to challenge outdated beauty standards and offer a new perspective. One that I see for myself every day as a boudoir photographer for women over 40. We’ve been sold a lie. There is no expiration date on beauty. Let me prove it to you! \nThis exhibit is proof that beauty exists in every chapter of life\, and that it’s never too late to feel truly seen. \nAbout the Artist \nWebsite: www.lauriemacbrownphotography.com \nYou may know me as your photographer\, but what you might not know is why I do this. \nI started photographing women to figure out the secret to looking good in photos\, because I never liked photos of myself\, and I thought there was something wrong with me. What I’ve learned is this: being photogenic is not about how you look on the outside. It’s about feeling beautiful and having someone capture that so you can see it too. \nToday\, I’m an accredited\, multi award-winning portrait photographer\, and my mission is to show women\, especially those over 40\, that every body is beautiful and worthy of being photographed\, even without clothes on. \nI invite you to see yourself\, and women like you\, in a whole new light.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Gilded Memory\, Clouded Truth by Michelle Atkinson and Danielle Bartlette
DESCRIPTION:Gilded Memory\, Clouded Truth by Michelle Atkinson and Danielle Bartlette \ncSPACE Marda Loop\nLevel 1 \nSeptember 22 – November 3\, 2025\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \nGildedMemory\, Clouded Truth presents the work of Michelle Atkinson and Danielle Bartlette\, two artists whose practices approach truth through layers of beauty\, memory\, and allure. \nAtkinson transforms raw climate data into silkscreened forms that recall clouds\, candy\, and dreamscapes. These luminous surfaces veil the wildfires and environmental upheaval beneath\, asking viewers to look closer at the stories we sugarcoat. \nBartlette’s mixed-media paintings reassemble memory through texture\, collage\, and embellishment. Her work navigates romance\, urban landscapes\, and personal history\, turning fragments of lived experience into lush abstractions. Placed side by side\, the works spark dialogue about what is hidden and what is revealed. Whether through the shimmer of glitter or the glint of gold leaf\, both artists remind us that surfaces hold weight — and beauty often conceals a more complicated truth. \nMore from the Artists: \nMichelle Atkinson – michelle-atkinson.ca \nDanielle Bartlette – neonmilkshake.com

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Where the Land Cradles Me by Carrie Schurig
DESCRIPTION:Where the Land Cradles Me by Carrie Schurig \ncSPACE Marda Loop\nCubby Gallery Level 2 \nSeptember 27 – December 1\, 2025 – HELD OVER UNTIL DECEMBER 1\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \nWhere the Land Cradles Me is a series of mixed-media paintings\, with each work carrying more than a single story; many stories\, many voices\, many landscapes\, many truths interwoven. \nThe surfaces hold tension and harmony\, permanence beside change\, silence beside song\, and memory beside dream. Yet these contrasts remind us of what is at stake. The land that cradles us is under threat\, and climate justice is not optional; it is essential. \nThis series asks viewers to consider how place is never one story but a gathering of countless narratives\, layered across time\, culture\, and imagination. It calls on viewers to recognize our shared responsibilities to protect the places that shape us. The land is more than a backdrop; it is a lifeline. It is about how the land cradles us all\, differently and together\, shaping the stories we live and pass on. To honour it means to act\, to defend its stories\, its balance and its future. \nAbout the Artist: \nCarrie Schurig is a Calgary-based artist whose work spans pencil drawing\, mixed media\, and painted resin\, Conceptual and representational\, her pieces explore memory\, emotion\, and the layered connections between people and place. Her current series is deeply rooted in her relationship with the land\, reflecting on how it shapes identity\, belonging\, and our sense of time. \nIn addition to her studio practice\, Carrie is a Visual Arts Specialist and Fine Arts Learning Leader with the Calgary Board of Education\, guiding students and communities to engage meaningfully with the arts. She is also embarking on a Master of Education for Change\, exploring how education can drive social and environmental transformation. \nThrough her art and teaching\, Carrie offers a distinct\, thoughtful\, and imaginative perspective on the world\, one that invites reflection\, curiosity\, and connection.

DESCRIPTION:Building Blocks by Sean Drysdale\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Level 3\nOctober 7 – November 1\, 2025\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \n\n\n\nSean Drysdale returns to cSPACE with version 3 of Building Blocks\, an exhibition of large images. \n\nArtist’s Talk: \nThursday\, October 16 | 5:30pm-7:45pm \nIn Attendance:  \n\nWednesday\, October 8 | 6-8pm\nSaturday October 25 | 1-3pm\nSaturday November 1 | 1-3pm\nOr by arrangement\n\nClosing Reception: \nThursday\, October 30 | 5:00-7:30pm \nAbout the Artist: \nSean Drysdale graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1984\, where he studied photography. Subsequent studies in mathematics and computers at Simon Fraser University led to a career in information management. \nHe returned to photography as an art form in 2016. By 2023\, he concluded that the world did not need another photographer. The label had always felt like a shirt occasionally worn but never entirely comfortable. Instead\, he began calling himself a wanderer—a description that felt far more fitting. To Drysdale\, this is a liberating and playful identity\, one that frees them from unhelpful personal expectations and existential questions such as what defines a “real” photographer.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Blue. by Margo Smith
DESCRIPTION:Blue. by Margo Smith  \ncSPACE Marda Loop\nCubby Gallery Level 2 \nOctober 20 – November 8\, 2025\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays) \nMargo’s artistic practice focuses on cyanotypes and paper sculpture. Cyanotypes are a camera-less photographic process developed in 1842\, in which paper or fabric is coated with a light-sensitive chemical solution and exposed to sunlight or UV light\, producing the deep blue pigment known as Prussian blue. \nThe works in this exhibition are photograms\, created by placing objects directly onto the light-sensitive surface to form negative images. Margo explores abstract compositions using transparent materials such as vellum\, plastics\, and paper. Through this process\, she captures the physical ways light interacts with each material\, producing soft\, layered images that evoke a floating sense of depth. \nGuided by an interest in geometric shapes\, lines\, and patterns\, Margo’s practice examines how forms shift through process and material. A core aspect of the cyanotype method for her is the balance between control and unpredictability—unexpected results often lead to new inspiration and direction\, allowing projects to evolve organically from hands-on experimentation. \nMany of the prints serve as foundations for Margo’s three-dimensional sculptures and installations. By reimagining a traditionally two-dimensional medium as sculptural form\, she investigates how light\, texture\, and structure can extend an image beyond a flat plane. Hand stitching and embroidery appear throughout her work\, adding tactile detail and emphasizing the transformation from print to object. \nAbout the Artist: \nMargo Smith is a Calgary based artist and educator\, committed to making visual arts accessible for all. She designs and leads workshops\, programs\, and gallery experiences that make art feel accessible\, engaging\, and relevant. Her art practice is focused on cyanotypes and paper sculpture. \nContact Info:\nunravelarts.ca\n@unravelarts.education\nunravelartseducation@gmail.com

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Great Treasures of Gold
DESCRIPTION:Great Treasures of Gold: A Canadian Latter-day Saint Religious Art Exhibition\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nLevel 3 & 4 \nNovember 7 – November 27\, 2025\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays)\nOpening Reception: November 6 | 6:30-9:00pm \nThis exhibition celebrates the rich tradition of Latter-day Saint art in Canada\, featuring nearly 100 original works by both living and deceased Canadian artists. The showcase highlights the diverse expressions of faith and creativity that have emerged within the community. \nThe title\, “Great Treasures of Gold\,” is inspired by a conversation between early pioneer Charles Card and Samuel Smith\, the brother of Joseph Smith\, Jr. Smith recalled a prophecy made in an 1843 priesthood meeting within the Nauvoo Temple\, in which it was stated that “[Canada] would never persecute the Saints as a nation. She would gather up great treasures of gold and yet we should seek refuge in her dominion.” \nThe phrase “Great Treasures of Gold” symbolizes not only the material wealth Canada was prophesied to gather\, but also the spiritual and cultural richness accumulated over more than a century of Latter-day Saint presence in the country. This exhibition pays tribute to the enduring artistic legacy that has flourished within this land of refuge.
